This clearly shows how the people of east and west Germany needed badly to unite into one nation again. Vergangenheit – translation: Past; sense of time For example: In der Vergangenheit – ein geteiltes Land , In the past – a divided country. The two Germanys, with two flags, and two different governments. With the Deutsche Wiedervereinigung in October 3rd, 1990 the two countries was truly a thing of the Vergangenheit. October, 1990 * Note that in 1989 the borders were opened but Germany was still two seperate countries for almost 1 year* Republikflucht - Escape the GDR without permission, it was very hard to even get permission for business trips or even visits which was even less likely. 1. How does the Stasi operate? What examples did you see in the movie?

A: They were basically the secret police, they spy on you, harrass you, hell they can march right into your home and search through your stuff. What were you gunna do about it?


2. Describe one of main characters Dreyman or Wiesler. How do their characters change? What are their political views?

A: Wiesler was a all out professional, he upheld his duty as a Socialist member and wouldn't hesitate to poke around asking questions of people who have any other ideas different of the governments. As the movie goes on I don't think Wiesler is totally against his previous ways but I think he eases up a bit. He does start to feel some feeling for the couple and he wants to help yet doesnt want to get his own ass in trouble. Wiesler helps in his own way, giving warnings, moving the typewritter, ect. Finally I think when the wall falls down, Wiesler seemed to be relieved, I think his last spy job really affected him. Its a complicated story to me but I tried to follow along. Kinda like a Romeo & Juliet story, nothing but tragedy.


3. Beschreibe Christa-Maria Sieland? Was sind ihre Staerken und was sind ihre Schwaechen?

A: Sie ist eine Theaterschauspielerin. Ich denke, dass sie verwundbar ist, weil sie eine Frau ist.

Ihre Liebe für Dreyman! Belästigt durch die DDR versucht sie, nichts zu sagen.



4. Wie ist die Beziehung zwischen Christa-Maria Sieland und Georg Dreyman? Was fuer Adjektive wuerden diese Beziehung beschreiben?

A: Es ist eine gutte Beziehung, aber die DDR vernichtet es. Ich denke, dass sie Dreyman liebt und will ihm helfen. Am Ende sie "caves" aber sie hat NIE auch gewollt!!
